Mr. Kennard, Ms. Whitney, Ms. Gorleski, and the Peer-to-Peer team coordinated a special event to raise awareness of student mental health for our 8th-12th grade students. The team arranged for guest speaker Will Heininger from the University of Michigan to visit and speak with students.
During his presentation, Heininger shared his personal journey as a former college football player and discussed the challenges he faced with his own mental health. He spoke openly about the pressures of athletics, the importance of seeking help, and the value of building supportive relationships. His message encouraged students to understand that struggling with mental health is not a sign of weakness and that reaching out for support is an important step toward healing and growth.
The event provided students with an opportunity to hear an authentic and powerful story about resilience, vulnerability, and the importance of mental health awareness. It also reinforced the Peer-to-Peer program’s mission of creating a supportive school environment where students feel comfortable talking about their struggles and seeking help when needed.

A huge thank you to our amazing community for supporting our YIG students through purchases at the concession stand during the basketball season. Every popcorn and drink you purchased helped keep this program running. More importantly, your support gave our students the opportunity to gain real-world, hands-on experience and build confidence in leadership, public speaking, and civic engagement. We truly couldn’t have done it without you!
We are also proud to share that Jersi Bullard ran for Chief Justice for next year — and won! She will serve as Chief Justice and lead all student judges at next year’s conference. What an outstanding accomplishment!
We are so proud of all of our students for representing our district so well. Thank you again to everyone who helped make this opportunity possible!

On Wednesday, March 11, students in grades 8 through 12 will attend a special assembly as part of our Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Mental Health Program. We will be welcoming guest speaker Will Heininger, who will present on mental health awareness and reducing stigma, with a particular focus on depression and anxiety.
💬 Why these sessions matter:
Adolescence is a critical time for learning how to understand emotions, recognize signs of mental health challenges, and seek help when needed. Informational sessions like this help students:
Normalize conversations about mental health
Build empathy and understanding for themselves and others
Learn that depression and anxiety are real, treatable conditions
Know when and how to reach out to a trusted adult for support
Will Heininger is a former University of Michigan defensive lineman who experienced depression as a student-athlete. He now serves as the Outreach Coordinator for the Eisenberg Family Depression Center, where he works to raise awareness and reduce stigma, especially among youth and young adults. His message emphasizes that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
❤️ Important note for families:
Because mental health topics can be sensitive, some students may need additional emotional support following the presentation. Our staff, who are all trained members of our P2P team through the University of Michigan, will be available throughout the day to support students and connect them with appropriate resources if needed.
📄 Opt-Out Information:
If you do not wish for your student to attend this assembly, please return the attached opt-out form by March 10, 2026 to Mrs. Whitney, jwhitney@vassar.k12.mi.us. (Form was emailed to all parents)
Thank you for your continued partnership in helping us foster a safe, supportive, and informed school community. Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.
